Though some may differ on the definition of “success,” as the Grand Junction Sentinel reports:
Western Slope lawmakers largely succeeded this year in pushing their bills, memorials and resolutions through the Legislature, according to records from the General Assembly and governor’s office.
All 11 of the Western Slope’s legislators, from Rep. Dan Gibbs, D-Silverthorne, to Sen. Jack Taylor, R-Steamboat Springs, to Rep. Ellen Roberts, R-Durango, had at least 57 percent of their measures signed into law.
Five lawmakers — Roberts; Reps. Bernie Buescher, D-Grand Junction; Kathleen Curry, D-Gunnison; Sens. Jim Isgar, D-Hesperus; and Gail Schwartz, D-Snowmass Village — had at least 90 percent of their bills signed or passed into law…
“You don’t introduce a bill unless you have the support to get it passed,” Buescher said. “The real work is before you introduce a bill: You develop the bill, you develop consensus.”
Sen. Josh Penry, R-Fruita, said even though bill-passage rates are an important part of gauging success, they should not be the sole criteria for judging a lawmaker’s effectiveness.
“We were able to poison the well on the labor-union bill and parolee voting so thoroughly that they ultimately died,” Penry said. “Sometimes the most important thing you do as a legislator is kill bills.” [Pols emphasis]

We haven’t seen her since her House District candidate, Bob Caskey, tanked last Nov.
She actually logs in regularly. I saw her here just yesterday. Moonraker too.
It’s interesting to check that out sometime to see who’s in the room but never says anything.
…I was actually thinking that we could use more quiet from some posters.
State Senator Joan Fitz-Gerald, D-Coal Creek Canyon, has been a formidable force for great legislation affecting the Western Slope. Governor Ritter has just signed three bills that she co-sponsored:
HB 1229 – Chain Law Bill for Commercial Vehicles
HB1130 – Forest Restoration Pilot Program and
HB 1168 – Forest Improvement for Special Districts
Colorado Confidential says,
“Senate President Joan Fitz-Gerald (D-Jefferson County) leads the pack” of Colorado’s 10 Most Successful Senators, yet Colorado Pols has eliminated her name from this article. Is someone asleep at the switch, or is there something more sinister going on?
Where did this shill come from?
Fitz-Gerald was behind the death of the Rainy-Day fund bill.
You want to help Western Slope legislators? Help them with their constituents.
Fitz-Gerald currently represents the 16th Legislative District in the Colorado State Senate. She currently represents 6 counties in the Legislature: Boulder, Clear Creek, Gilpin, Grand, Jefferson and Summit. Grand and Summit are on the Western Slope! Someone didn’t do their homework.
Diabolical!
I know those counties are on the west side of the continental divide, so technically you can say that’s west slope. I tend to think of “west slope” as beyond those counties though (think I-70 beyond Vail, getting down out of the mountains).
I don’t think “Joan Fitzgerald” when I think of Western Slope legislators, though technically two of her counties are West. (Red headed stepchildren:)
Whatever one considers “technical” boundries really isn’t the point.Credit is due to the person who initiated, and supported legislation that will benefit the Western Slope. Senator Fitz-Gerald has been visible in both Grand and Summit counties and those residents are grateful for her support. To have eliminated her from the article was really not necessary.
can attempt to spin his failures into a positive through his sophistry. Even republican rookie Steve King had a better effort in getting his work introduced and passed. As inept as Penry has proven to be, there are still some standing behind this failed legislator. Penry has made a career out of whining. He is still clueless when it comes to solutions.
Not sure where your information is coming from but Penry has helped the West slope quite a bit over the years. This year specifically he successfully passed two bills that help increase the local government share of severance taxes and federal mineral lease funding. He was able to get funding for homeless youth shelters as well. The only reason Steven King was able to get legislation passed was through the help of Penry.
Penry is conservative and can be hardcore at times, but he is fair and works extremely hard for his district.
To say he is clueless is plain wrong.
by Wadhams. Just because Penry saw the writing on the wall and hitched his one trick sophistry pony show to and hopped on the wagon driven by Reps Curry and Buescher to adjust the mineral severance distribution does not mean “he successfully passed two bills.” Penry’s extremism is not looked upon with any favor at the legislature or Colorado in general. He is a whiner, plain and simple. When Ref C was the issue, he threw temper tantrums but failed to come up with a viable alternative. Governor Owens had to slap him down a couple of notches when Penry was whining about the immigration bill. And now Penry is back to his whiny self in having fits about Governor Ritter’s education funding. Instead of acting like a two year old, Penry should grow up and present alternatives he if does not like the current purposed solutions. But we know t is much easier to take the whiny chicken way out than coming up with solutions. Penry has been and remains clueless when it comes to viable solutions. Period!
He told me it was a Manhattan!
Seriously though, it wasn’t just Curry and Buescher who pushed the impact funding issue, Penry has worked the issue for awhile.
As far as being a whiner, well, let’s say that there are plenty of Democrats who I heard ‘whine’ a plenty during the Owens years…
Anyway, to each their own and its Friday afternoon, I’m outta here for now and off to get a Starbucks, go to the bank and then enjoy the afternoon.
Maybe I’ll have some Kool Aid too.
